Real Women, Real Stories: Mirna

1. Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Mirna and I am 34 years old. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Brian, for 5 years now and we have two beautiful little boys who are 4 and 2. We live in Mission Viejo, California and I am a Stay at Home Mommy. Last year I was diagnosed with Alopecia Universalis associated to Systemic Lupus. My hair loss journey began with a few balding spots during my pregnancies, but had always grown back. When my youngest son was a little over year old it became clear that my hair loss was getting to be aggressive. Within a matter of 6 months I went from having my full head of hair (although always biologically thin) to completely bald. Since then, I’ve also lost the rest of the hair on my body, including my eyelashes and eyebrows. I recently saw a quote that really captures my journey: “I’m thankful for my struggle because without it I wouldn’t have stumbled across my strength.”

2. How long have you been wearing wigs or hairpieces?

When my hair was falling out it was devastating. I started out by covering my bald spots with human hair extensions and lots of tinted dry shampoo. As the hair loss aggressively progressed I began to wear hats, but hats don’t exactly go with everything and aren’t appropriate for all occasions, so I made my first trip to a local wig salon. I spent a lot of time finding the perfect wig for me and fell in love with a Lace Front Human Hair Wig by Jon Renau. It is my dream hair. It’s thick, holds curl, and I get compliments all the time. People think its completely natural looking! I’ve since purchased 2 two more Jon Renau’s. It has been one year this past August since my wig journey began!

3. What advice would you give to a new alternative hair wearer?

The advice I have for a new alternative hair wearer is to not get discouraged about discomfort in the beginning stages of wearing the wig. For someone like myself, I was never used to thick, beautiful hair. It looked foreign on me because I had such thin hair then to almost completely bald, so when I wore my new wig I felt like I looked like a helmet head. This, my friends, was all in my head. It always looked beautiful on me. People who didn’t know about my hair loss would compliment me on what beautiful head of hair I have. The lace front wig I purchased from Jon Renau has such a natural parting hair line that it truly looks as if the hair grew out of my head!
