6 Hacks When Traveling With Wigs

When you rely on alternative hair, the thought of maintaining your hairstyle while on the road can be daunting. Yet with a bit of preparation and the right techniques, traveling with wigs can be a breeze! In light of Summer approaching, we’re sharing our favorite must-know hacks for traveling with wigs, so you can enjoy your vacation feeling present and confident in your skin.

Hack #1: Don’t Become Victim to Murphy’s Law

What can go wrong will go wrong, right? Bring one of your older wigs as a back-up just in case something happens to the main one you brought, such as getting lost or damaged. Having a spare along will give you that extra bit of reassurance. If it’s an older wig you don’t wear that often, you won’t feel guilty if it never leaves your suitcase! Plus, if you’re going somewhere with harsh temperatures or somewhere near salt water, you won’t risk damaging the lace or hair fiber on your favorite everyday wig. You can even experiment wearing your older wig under stylish caps and hats!

Hack #2: Don’t Underestimate a Plastic Bag

Our best recommendation is to pack your wig(s) safely in their retail boxes for the most protection. However, if you’ve already tossed the box, no need waste your money investing in an expensive travel case! Jon Renau education expert, Emily Buckwalter, suggests,

"A plastic bag is a perfect solution for storing your wigs in your luggage. Just make sure the lace is lying flat to avoid bending and damaging the delicate material."

Depending on where you’re traveling to, it can be routine for airport staff or border officers to look through your bag. If you have your wig(s) safely stowed in their perspective bags, they won’t get damaged by a hurried suitcase rummage.

Hack #3: Labels are Your Friend

When traveling with multiple wigs, label each wig case or bag with its style and color to easily identify them.

Hack #4: Good Things Come in Small Packages

Pack travel-sized versions of your favorite wig care products. While we don’t know what’s in those hotel sample shampoos, we do know your wig fibers will not respond well to them! Additionally (and this is a big one), always have a wide tooth comb on hand! They’re small enough to keep in your purse and are a savior for a quick detangling throughout the day, especially for an active-packed day or long hours on the road. This leads us to the next hack...

Hack #5: Skip the Length

When traveling through airports or on road trips, we recommend wearing a short or mid-length wig. This can help to avoid the friction of a wig on the seat if you’re sitting (or napping) on a flight or in the car for hours at a time. It also means the straps of your carry-on don’t get tangled in the wig when taking the bag on and off for airport security checks and boarding processes. Plus, short hair could become your new strength! Check out this insightful blog post, Samson and Delilah - Hair is Your Superpower from Chic Wig Boutique about the power of short hair.

Hack #6: Natural Steam Does Wonders

Nobody enjoys seeing their precious, delicate wig style bent and misshapen after a day of being stored in luggage. This is what we call “cold crimping” or “box hair”. Emily shares her favorite quick fix,“If I am wearing synthetic and it gets a little cold crimped, then I put it in the bathroom on a wig stand while I shower. The steam will help me smooth out and reshape the style.”

We hope these tips and expert hacks help you feel more prepared for your next adventure! Traveling with wigs doesn't have to be stressful. By incorporating these easy hacks into your travel routine, you can embrace getting lost wherever your wanderlust leads you.
