Choose the Perfect Hair Topper in 3 Easy Steps
Posted by JR on Feb 6th 2020
Jon Renau has a variety of hair toppers to address every stage of hair loss. Our toppers are available in many different base designs, lengths, and fibers.
If you are looking for your first hair topper, we highly recommend going to one of our retailers for an in-person consultation. A consultation gives you the invaluable opportunity to meet with an alternative hair expert who will answer all your questions and help you find the right hair topper for your level of hair loss and lifestyle. They can also assist with color matching to your biological hair, which can be tricky to do on your own! You can find an alternative hair expert near you here.
However, if you prefer to select a topper yourself at home, we've created 3 easy steps to help you find the perfect one for you. We also have a free resource for you, available to download at the end of this blog! Let's get started!
STEP 1: IDENTIFY + MEASURE YOUR HAIR LOSS
Find the area of hair loss or the amount of coverage needed. There must be a sufficient amount of hair to attach the clips to, which is why measuring is so important.
We also have a handy video that demonstrates how to measure your area of hair loss. Click HERE to watch.
Step 2: Choose the fiber
Understanding your lifestyle and expectations of your topper will help you find the correct fiber.
View the chart to learn more about the pros and cons of each fiber. You can use this information to decide which fiber would be the best fit for your lifestyle. Think about how much time you want to spend styling or caring for your hair, or how much styling flexibility you want to have.
For example, if you're a busy person with very limited time for styling and maintenance, you will most likely want to choose a synthetic topper.
If your priority is achieving the most natural look and having lots of styling options, you will most likely prefer human hair.
Step 3: Color Match
The last step is to find the right color to match your biological hair! If you're color-matching at home, we recommend using a color ring. The swatches and photos on our website are meant to give you an idea of our colors, however, they will not be 100% accurate due to variations in device screens.
Jon Renau color rings can be purchased from any of our retailers. Click here to find an online retailer or a retailer near you.
Another option is to get a color ring through the Wigs.com color ring loan program. Learn more about this here.
Here are some of our tips for color-matching:
- Use the corresponding color ring for the fiber chosen as there is a slight variation in color between each fiber.
- Toppers are applied 1 to 2 inches back from the front hairline. This means you need to match the topper to the color of your biological hair, which is often lighter around your face.
- Blending and styling the topper and your biological hair together will create a natural and seamless look.
