Myth-Busting: Alternative Human Hair Types

Have you ever been shopping for a human hair wig or topper and seen, "100% Chinese Remy hair", or "50/50 blend of Indian and Chinese hair" and wondered what this means or how these types of hair might differ?

A big misconception we often hear is that hair origin—such as Chinese, Indian, or European hair—pertains to hair quality. Believe it or not, this is a total myth!

Hair quality boils down to the strength and durability of the hair once it’s finished being processed to create the beautiful range of colors that are available. That’s why building a relationship with factories that we trust is so important. So that you know—when you're buying from Jon Renau, you’re buying quality hair that you can trust.

Hair origin pertains to the thickness of the hair circumference, what we call hair denier or hair strand thickness, creating different characteristics in how the hair moves, looks and behaves. Hair type really comes down to your personal needs and preferences!

Let’s dive deeper into characteristics of hair types, or origins, and who they’re best suited for, so when you're out shopping for your next piece, you'll know what type of hair to choose based on your needs.

.

European Hair

European hair is going to be the finest and the thinnest of all three fibers. It's sometimes misunderstood as the more ideal hair type, just because of how soft the hair is and how well it blends in with a wide range of textures. 100% European pieces, like Chantal from our Professionnel Collection, will be extremely soft and move like biological hair.

Characteristics of European Hair:

  • The finest and thinnest of all three fibers, it is extremely soft
  • Makes a great option for toppers, as it will blend well with fine, thin biological hair

.

Who it’s best for: Topper wearers or wig wearers searching for a finer hair-feel

Chinese Hair

Chinese hair is going to be the thickest of all the deniers, meaning the actual circumference size of the hair is the largest. For this reason, it is the strongest and will lay beautifully straight and smooth with a natural shine to it. When we create pieces with 100% Chinese Remy hair, like Colbie from our Human Hair Reimagined Collection, you can expect strength and durability that can outlast the cap materials (if cared for properly).

Characteristics of Chinese Hair:

  • The thickest of all three deniers (actual size of the hair) means it’s the strongest.
  • It lays beautifully straight and smooth and has a natural shine to it.

.

Who it’s best for: Wig wearers seeking a long-lasting piece with a silky-soft hair feel that is irresistible

50/50 Blend of Indian and Chinese Hair

We typically use a 50/50 blend of Indian and Chinese hair for our Jon Renau hairpieces. Indian hair has a natural wave pattern that allows it to dry beautifully and naturally. When we pair the strength of the Chinese hair and the wave of the Indian hair, the two together take on the qualities of one another.

Characteristics of Indian/Chinese Blend:

  • Pairing the strength of the Chinese hair and the natual wave of the Indian hair creates a hairpiece with durability and a natural look and feel.

Who it’s best for: Wig wearers seeking a piece with durability and beautiful movement, or wanting a variety of style options to choose from.

Remy hair is another term often misunderstood in the world of alternative hair. Remy hair has nothing to do with quality either, rather, the method used for sorting and processing the hair. To learn more about the difference between Remy and Non-Remy hair, read our blog, Remy vs. Non-Remy Hair.

Ultimately, you can't go wrong when purchasing a human hair piece, regardless of the type of hair it is. Jon Renau has worked passionately and diligently to build a trusting relationship with our factories so that you can expect top quality with every purchase.

When we talk about human hair having a 9–12-month lifespan, this refers to the cap materials. Our intention is for the hair to outlast the cap because we care about the longevity of the hair that we're offering.

We hope that by reading this blog, you now feel confident making an informed choice with choosing your next human hair wig or topper.
