All About That Base

Jun 27th 2023

Hair toppers instantly transform your look by adding volume and body to fine, thin hair. Our clip in hair toppers offer unique solutions at each stage of hair loss, from beginning to advanced stages; just because you are in an advanced stage of hair loss does not mean you need to wear a full wig.

Whether you’re currently wearing a topper or looking for a new one, it’s important to identify the stage of hair loss and the area of coverage needed to find the correct topper every time.

Choosing a topper may seem simple, but since hair loss can be progressive, your area of hair loss could change or shift. Choosing the proper topper base size is not only going to make your hairpiece look more natural but also ensure that you are not pulling on your biological hair, causing further hair loss.

Learn how to find your perfect topper in four simple steps:

Identify your STAGE of hair loss.

Is your hair loss in beginning, mid/progressive, or advanced stage?

Identify your AREA of hair loss.

Determine the area that needs coverage—where is your hair loss more prominent? Does thinning or hair loss occur in the front, crown, hair part, all throughout the top of your head or spots throughout your head?

Record your MEASUREMENTS.

Start and stop your measurements in an area with a sufficient amount of hair. What’s most crucial is that the area you’re clipping to can support the weight of the hair system to avoid causing hair loss to your biological hair.

Once you’ve established the area that needs coverage, first measure from front-to-back

Then measure from side-to-side:

Write down the measurements. Make sure to add 1” to each measurement to ensure clips have a sufficient amount of hair to attach to outside the area of hair loss. A common question we get is, ‘What if I don’t have enough hair to clip where my clips are attaching’? This is a likely indicator that it’s time to move up to larger base size options.

Reference the Jon Renau TOPPER CHART.

Once you have your stage, area, and measurements, use the Jon Renau Topper Chart to determine which topper base size will give you the best coverage.

Since hair loss can be progressive, it is important that you frequently check the areas you are clipping to and that you retake your measurements every 6 months.

Hair loss is as unique as you are so remember that there are many base designs, no matter what stage of hair loss you are in.

Our best recommendation is to schedule a consultation with an alternative hair specialist in your area. They can help you identify your stage of hair loss and make personalized product recommendations.
