EA Spotlight – Kim
Jul 11th 2022
Throughout the year, we are featuring each of our wonderful Education Ambassadors in the hopes that their anecdotes and insights will empower those who experience hair loss.
First, we introduced you to Jo Tucker, who shared her message about having fun with wigs, despite the heartbreak of hair loss.
Now, let’s meet Kim Stam, who’s passionate about sharing her hair loss solutions and embracing change.
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I am 44 years old and live in Sydney, Australia. I have had alopecia universails for the last 5 years. I guess you could say I am still relatively young in alopecian years! My hair loss journey started in 2017 when I experienced rapid hair loss after a routine gallbladder removal procedure. In the last 3 years, I have also been diagnosed with Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis, both different types of autoimmune diseases, that can also contribute to hair loss.
How long have you been wearing wigs or hairpieces?
I bought my very first wig after 5 months of experiencing hair loss and it was specifically because I needed a new license photo. I recall not knowing anything about wigs, hair and cap options, I was really overwhelmed. My first wig was actually very “costumey”, it looked “wiggy”. But I quickly became bolder and daring with my wig choices; a colour for any occasion, wig styles for every day of the week and getting creative by pairing my wigs with fun makeup looks.
When you started your hair loss journey, what do you wish you knew?
No one gets it right from the get-go, and I realized that no one was looking to see if I was wearing a wig. Because I was so self-conscious I thought that it was obvious to everyone that I was wearing a wig.
What is the best part about being an education ambassador?
I love that I can help other people out there with hair loss to feel empowered but to also have fun with wigs like I do. Providing education I feel like can help someone else out there who might be searching for information or maybe starting on their own hair loss journey.
What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself while being an education ambassador?
I have a rabid thirst for knowledge when it comes to hair loss and hair loss solutions. And being able to share that through the EA program is really fulfilling.
What advice would you give to a new alternative hair wearer?
Don’t feel disheartened if you don’t get it right the first time. Practice makes perfect when it comes to choosing and wearing alternative hair.
Which Jon Renau style is your favorite?
That's probably the trickiest question anyone could ask me, because I love all my 'girls' and for different reasons. Though, one style I have been reaching for most frequently lately is the Laura synthetic wig from the Professional Collection, in one of my favourite shades, Salted Caramel. She has the most perfect long length and layering and looks fantastic paired with hair accessories.
