How to Blend Your Topper

Jul 31st 2023

There are plenty of reasons to wear a hair topper—as a solution for hair loss, to elevate your natural hair, bump up your volume, try fringe without commitment, and much more. Whichever your reason is, there’s two qualities that are typically high up on the list of importance: Realism and Discreetness.

The key to achieving a seamless transition between your Jon Renau topper and your existing hair lies in the accuracy of color matching, length choice, styling and application. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the process and highlight one of Jon Renau's latest must-have products for blending toppers—Blend & Build Root Spray.

Jon Renau offers human hairsynthetic and Heat-Resistant (HD) synthetic toppers. Each fiber requires different styling and maintenance methods for optimal blending. Below are some things to consider as you assess your needs and preferences:

HUMAN HAIR TOPPERS: More versatile than their synthetic counterpart, human hair toppers can be heat-styled to blend most naturally with your biological hair. They offer the most natural look and feel but do require more maintenance and will react to the environment just like natural hair. To prevent frizz and flyaways, Jon Renau’s Redefine Anti-Humidity Spray will be your best friend.

SYNTHETIC TOPPERS: Whether you opt for straight or wavy, synthetic toppers come pre-styled and will maintain their shape in rain or shine and after washing. This means you don’t have to worry about reactivity to moisture in the environment. In order to combat your bio hair reactivity, style your bio hair with Redefine Anti-Humidity Spray. Synthetic toppers are a lower maintenance option, but keep in mind that synthetic fibers cannot be colored or heat styled, as it would damage the fibers.

HEAT-DEFIANT (HD) SYNTHETIC TOPPERS: Our HD Synthetic toppers will have a more natural texture and tone than traditional synthetic and can be heat styled to blend with your biological hair. Bear in mind the color cannot be altered, and it can tangle easily. Make sure to keep your HD Smooth Detangler and Wide Tooth Comb on hand to prevent tangling.

Matching the topper length and color to your own hair is crucial to get the most natural look possible. Here’s what we recommend:

LENGTH:

Jon Renau offers topper lengths from 5” - 18” inches, however, the majority of our toppers are available in 8”, 12” or 18” lengths. Measure your hair from roots to ends to assess the right length for you.

COLOR:

Consider Professional Consultation: Our best recommendation is to have an alternative hair professional color match you. If your hair has highlights or multiple tones, a professional’s eye can be invaluable in determining the right color for you. Consultations may be scheduled online or in-person. Find a retailer in your area using our Store Locator tool.

Below are some tips when color-matching from home:

1. Order a Color Ring: Jon Renau offers color rings for both their synthetic and human hair products, which can be ordered from a Jon Renau eTailer. These rings include swatches of all available colors for accurate color matching. Match the swatch to the hair framing your face. This area of your hair will be exposed and needs to blend with the color of your topper for the most natural look.

2. Assess your hair color in natural light: Natural light will give you the most accurate representation of your hair color when comparing to a Jon Renau color ring or online color swatch. Take a few photos outside in the daylight as a reference.

Proper preparation for styling and application will ensure your topper blends most naturally with your biological hair.

Key tips when prepping for application:

  1. Style your topper while pinned to a canvas block head, rather than when it’s attached to your biological hair to prevent pulling, which can cause additional hair loss. Make sure to pin your topper to the canvas block head through the clips, not the base materials to prevent topper hair loss or base tears.
  2. For best blending results, pre-style your biological hair to match your topper style prior to application.

.To apply your topper, follow these easy steps:

  1. Open all pressure-sensitive clips. Align the topper parting with your hair parting and place the front clip about 1-2" back from your natural hair line.
  2. Secure the front clip first and use one hand to hold the base flat and taut against your head as you clip the back clip next, then the side clips, so the topper lays as flat as possible.
  3. Use a Jon Renau Paddle Brush for human hair or Wide Tooth Comb for synthetic and HD fiber to blend the topper in with your hair. Hold the topper in place with the opposite hand.
  4. If you seek additional volume or length, consider adding some of Jon Renau’s easiPieces clip-in hair volumizers to complete your look.

.

To further assist in achieving a perfect blend, Jon Renau introduced Blend & Build Spray. This innovative product is designed to add color depth and help you match your topper perfectly. It is particularly useful if your biological hair is darker at the roots, a light spritz of this spray at the area where the topper meets your natural hair, followed by a gentle combing, can work wonders for integration. Remember, less is more when using this product. Start with a small amount and add more as needed.
