Real Women, Real Stories: Amy

Tell us a little about yourself
I am a retired English teacher turned whole foods plant-based food blogger. I left teaching early to embrace other interests in my life. I still privately tutor middle school students in English, but I spend much of my time, cooking, gardening, walking, and managing my Mrs. Plant social media channels. I have two sons (ages 22 and 25) and a loving husband of almost 28 years.

After my second son was born, I shed hair like most women do. However, after 18 months, I was still losing hair. That didn’t seem right to me. So, I went to my doctor, and she had me go to a connective tissue specialist to see what might be wrong. After a scalp biopsy, I was diagnosed with Androgenic Alopecia—genetic hair thinning, usually onset by hormonal changes in the body. I was told there was little I could do to stop the thinning. For 22 years, I have disguised my hair thinning with camouflaging haircuts and hairbands, but the fear of attending my oldest son’s wedding in December with my current hair condition brought me to the idea of wearing wigs.

How long have you been wearing wigs or hairpieces?
I have been wearing wigs since December 2017.

What advice would you give to a new wig/topper wearer?
Be confident! I found that my own initial insecurity about wearing a wig set the tone. My sons were uncomfortable with it, as a result. When I woke up one morning and decided that I look much better in a wig and the ease of wearing one (and not having to deal with trying to get my thin hair into a style), my attitude changed. I smiled more. I laughed more. As a result, people complimented me and accepted my wig-wearing more!

What do you love about our brand?
I love the comfort of the caps, the hair fibers (realistic!!!), and the color choices!
