How long have you been in the alternative hair business?

A Special Place opened in July of 2004

What inspired you to start this business?

Having worked as a post-mastectomy fitter for 8 years, I realized there was a need in our area for wigs for women experiencing hair loss, so I set out to create a warm, inviting environment offering high quality wigs and personalized service.

What kind of services do you offer?

We are a full-service wig salon - offering private consultations, cutting, styling and sizing, as well as cleaning and refurbishing. We have an insurance specialist on staff to help file insurance claims. We also feature complementary products, headwear, makeup and skin care, jewelry and scarves and compression hosiery.

What advice would you give to someone looking to purchase wig / topper for the first time?

First, forget everything you think you know about wigs and hair pieces, and prepare to be amazed. One of the most common comments we receive is - "I've been dreading this, I thought it was going to be hard, and you made it so easy. I wish I'd done this sooner." Also, all the online research in the world is not going to tell you what is going to look best on you. Go to an experienced wig salon and experience the products in person. This way you can see the quality, the style and the color, try them on, receive professional advice, and feel confident in your selection.

What is your favorite Jon Renau piece?

I love Ignite! I personally wear it in about 4 different colors. When I have a client who doesn't know what they want - "maybe long, maybe short" - I almost always start with Ignite. Heat, Rosie, Blake and Sophia are all favorites. And I love EasiPart!

You are CORE certified, what would you say to someone who has not yet attended?

I am a huge believer in education - for myself and my staff. Attending CORE Education really elevates the level of service that you provide your clients. Personally, I appreciated CORE II - having been in this business for some time, and having attended numerous vendor training events, sometimes it felt like I was stuck repeating "Wigs 101". I was so excited to have a chance to "graduate" to more advanced education. I plan on attending again this year with my staff, because you can never take it all in the first time around. I also enjoy the opportunity to network with other business owners - you pick up so many tips and tricks. If you haven't been - don't wait - go!

What changes have you seen in our industry in the past 5 years?

This is a people business. You must take the time to listen, to understand, and treat each person as an individual. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. When you genuinely care about the needs of your customers, they will keep coming back and refer their friends. There is nothing that can compete with word of mouth advertising, or the satisfaction of knowing you are making a difference in people's lives.
